The sense of sight gives the soul a window to see the world and certainly without it there would be great difficulty to appreciate the world. Many conditions affect our eyes some are preventable while others are treatable. Care of our eyes is important throughout life.

KCH provides comprehensive eye care services using modern technology and well qualified staff. The hospital has recently acquired equipment which has increased the range and quality of services provided by the department.

Anaesthesia and Intensive Care

The department offers:

•General regional anaesthesia

•Intensive care medicine

•Anaesthesia training

•Run pain clinic occasionally


To give safe and timely anaesthesia to patients


To give quality care pre-operation, intra-operation and post-operation, including intensive Care Unit.

The Medical Department at Kamuzu Central Hospital is organized in 4 Teams: A, B, C and D. Each team consists of a Head of Firm (usually a registrar), consultants, Interns and students.

•Ward 4A:  Female Medical Ward

•Ward 4B:  Male Medical Ward (4 beds)

•HDU:  High Dependency Unit (in ward 4A)

•Ward 2:  Hemodialysis Unit (in ward 2)

•Tb Ward at Bweila (ward rounds alternating Tuesdays and Fridays)

•Short Stay Unit: Admitting and Short-stay ward (8 beds)

•Diabetic Clinic:  Medical Specialist Clinic OPD II Tuesdays from 9:30

•General Medicine Clinic:  Medical Specialist Clinic OPD II Wed from 9:30

•In-patient HIV clinic: Medical Specialist Clinic Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 13:00 in OPD 1 (in collaboration with UNC, Lighthouse, KCH clinicians)

•Oncology /Hematology  Clinic: Medical Specialist Clinic Tuesday, Thursday Ward 2 UNC room from 9:00 a.m (KCH/UNC).


Also there are clinics of partnering organizations .These are:

•Light House Trust ART Clinic: Monday to Friday from 8:00 am

•STD clinic of UNC in OPD 7


Physiotherapy department is involved in the assessment of patients with orthopaedic, neurological, cardio-vascular rehabilitation needs and rehabilitation of children with disabilities. 

Specialists are available every Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm by appointment. The department is temporarily located in ward 2B but there is a proposal for building a physiotherapy and rehabilitation centre in the ground floor in the pipeline.

KCH physiotherapy has got state of art electro-therapy equipments from corporate donations which can treat sports injuries, stroke patients and the elderly, as well as the children clientele.


Surgical department of KCH is one of the fastest growing departments in the last five years. From a department which had only one specialist, it has now grown into a full department with a compliment of six surgeons and thirteen trainee surgeons. This has increased the range of surgical procedures done at the hospital.
